As Congress returns from recess soon, members will be tasked with deciding whether to support the Iran nuclear deal, a portion of which would allow that country to start selling its oil globally.

In the meantime, U.S. crude oil products still cannot be sold globally.

And that needs to change.

The ban on U.S. crude oil exports was put in place in the 1970s during the energy crisis as a way to insulate the nation from price spikes and ensure a sufficient supply. The U.S. was at the mercy of OPEC nations’ oil.

However, the United States is now an energy superpower, exporting more oil and natural gas than it has in decades and developing smarter technology to use alternative energy sources.

From a global perspective, we should be using those resources to improve our national security by providing allies with U.S. oil so they aren’t buying from our enemies.

The group I represent — Vets4Energy — believes that there is a nexus between energy security and national security and that energy policy should be made with defense and the military in mind.
