Energy advocacy groups speak out against offshore drilling decision
February 19, 2015
Three energy advocacy groups are condemning a decision to omit Florida from a proposed federal plan to conduct offshore oil and natural gas exploration in areas known to contain energy resources. The proposed exploration period is from 2017 and 2022, but areas offshore from Florida's Atlantic coast and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico won't be included.
The groups, Florida Energy Forum, the Consumer Energy Alliance and Florida Vets4Energy say the decision will have a negative impact on job creation, the state's economic portfolio and even national security.
"As a veteran, it is clear to me that the success of the United States in cutting reliance on foreign oil from unstable countries is critical to maintaining our own National Security," said Maj. Gen. William Hodgkins, retired U.S. Air Force and chair of Florida Vets4Energy.
