Letter: Fracking best left to private property owners

As a landowner, I am concerned about the increasing government regulation restricting private land use. A statewide ban on hydraulic fracturing — “fracking” — is another regulation that restricts private property rights, and I am opposed to such legislation.

I believe fracking is a safe and scientifically backed way of creating a reliable energy supply. My family happens to have some mineral rights in the Jay oil fields in South Alabama and Northwest Florida. To date, 650 million barrels of oil have been pumped from those fields, and when you drive through the area I doubt you would even know there was a well there. The subsurface strata there are the same over the entire state. The positive aspects this has generated there are huge, and these fields have supplied this country with clean, cheap energy for over 40 years...
